Party

I do hope that you are all enjoying yourselves - it is well past midnight here, so I am officially a day late, for that matter - I did not have time to organise any special imagery for the oh so special event (sadly, Mirlo would not allow me to photograph him wearing a party hat), so the curious little drawings above shall have to suffice!

Ah, and what more reason to celebrate than the arival of a brand new sock stash!?

I have been stupidly busy finishing my project for the lovely Puella. Most of the work is complete, at long, long last!

A sneaky peek?

Twilight Circus

.

Welcome, yet again, to the Art&Ghosts Circus.

A little more circus-y than usual, in fact:

.

Circus

.

Fi9abc_rounded_small_2

Many of these new works were so perfectly inspired by Iplehouse's Noctarana Circus (Thank you Jeanette!)..........

.

Twilight Pierrot

.

Fi11a_rounded_small_2

The above is my favourite of recent days. I adore her little clown suit, regardless the silly, slouchy effect of the bloomers.

Tea Rose

A new face. And a brand new concept - the portable tea table.

Travelling teasets. Elegance and mysticism combined...

Pixie-Led

.

Fi8small_3

I have been deeply in love with the paintings of Millais for as long as I can remember, and the above image, however unlikely, makes me think of his 'Woodsman's Daughter'.

They are nothing whatsoever alike, although the combination of red, green and forest trees may very well have something to do with it.

This is the enchanted fairy path. The Tylwyth Teg. The Longest Road. Consider traversing it at your peril.

Circus Sally

Clearly, she wanted in on the circus-y action. It was not my place to refuse;)

.

I am finally installed at my brand new abode.

This has to have been the most stressful, mindbending, long and drawn out process that I have experienced in many, many years. But it was worth it. Most definitely! I am only half settled at present, as many of my smaller possessions have not yet arrived (tomorrow, hopefully), and poor little Mirlo is still in a state of intense shock, which does nothing for my own state of mind.....but still, we are deliriously happy to have made the move.

The most wonderful thing of all (apart from having finally said goodbye to a disturbed and violent neighborhood) has to be the amount of space - I now have my very own work room, a giantesque kitchen, monolithic, built-in wardrobes and a garden with a cute little shed (!!!). To some, this may not appear to be so stupidly extravagant, but to myself and the kitten, it is nothing short of a dream come true. We were previously living in a flat the size of a sardine tin, no storage space to speak of, no proper ventilation; and in recent months, the surrounding apartments have fallen into hopeless disrepair, becoming a haven for drug dealers and vodka addled derelicts with nothing better to do than tearing the security doors from their hinges and setting fire to the communal hallways. It used to be such a peaceful place, but such is life.

So!

I have no new creative offerings to share with you just yet, for most of my equipment is still boxed. Add to that, this is one tired bunny who desperately needs to relax! It is a curious thing to be only half settled. Becoming used to brand new sounds, sights and the natural rhythm of a new place may be exciting, but it is also quite...frightening. I have moved from a third floor, tiny flat, overlooking the town center's high rise buildings and a network of very busy roads - to a canal-side semi-detached house, surrounded by small family homes and a large expanse of open land. I am attempting to adjust to the sound of children playing ( the most ear wrenching gleefully insane screams!), rushing water by the canal locks at night, giant black crows (instead of infuriatingly stupid town pigeons) and ....... nothingness after dark. I love it, I'm quite certain that I love it....and I'm scared;)

I thought to share a few snapshots, but please bear in mind that the place is so very undone as yet. So minimal, so cleeeean!

.

Nh14small

.

Spot the Blackapple. Unpacked CD's. Here we have the almost bare living room, complete with what I can only describe as a potato-waffle style carpet. The only room devoid of waffle style carpet is the kitchen, which boasts the standard parquet, which in Art&Ghosts terms equals death trap when wearing woolen socks.

.

Nh10small

.

Unfinished work room. Beautifully bright, this room overlooks canal side and trees. The endless sound of birdsong...... and screaming children. For some unbearable reason, I cannot hammer nails into the walls. The last time I tried, the nail bent in half and a rather hefty shelf fell from the wall, smashed into my PC monitor, cartwheeled across the room, resulting in yet another feline nervous breakdown.

.

Nh8small

  .

Nh6asmall

.

The bedroom. Large, light and very friendly. It helps to have a friendly bedroom. My last one simply wasn't.

.

Nh5small

.

I'm sort of fond of the interior doors. They are rather old, with seemingly ancient, curious little locks. Who has the keys is what I want to know!

Nh3small

.

And finally, for now, the tiny little garden. Trust me, a serious novelty after third-floor living and overlooking mile-high stacks of concrete for the last decade:)

.

.......................................................................

.

I will return very soon with the usual, for sure. Thank you, as always, for stopping by, and for all of the wonderful little messages that I have received over the past couple of weeks. I am still struggling through a mountain of emails, so if you have attempted to contact me (especially via my previous email address)over the past week or so, it may take a little while for me to relocate you.

Before I sign off, I need to leave a message for two people in particular - Jeanette (UK) and the lady who is awaiting a custom version of 'Recurring Hares'. I have somehow managed to delete your email addresses (for which I am insanely apologetic!), so if you happen to read this post, then contact me via my blog or Etsy shop, I would be very grateful indeed!

.

I must go and sample the twilight now. We have many twilight-friendly bats here, and i should like to say hello to them.

Take care, as always,

A Séance in Fairyland...

.

Ok, so I said that I had to take a small break. Well, I couldn't keep away! Regardless, my posts will more than likely continue to appear unpredictably haphazard until I am well and truly settled.

I would like to share some work that I have been attempting to finalize over the past month or so; I seem to have recently developed the rather irritating habit of obsessing over fine details. It never used to be this way! But nowadays, a piece of work will remain hidden, sometimes for weeks on end, until I am finally satisfied with it as a whole. I have become a perfectionist, it seems. Whether this suggests any advancement in my technique, an attention to detail that shall ultimately benefit my endeavors, or else a shattering collapse of nerve, I have no actual idea.....The following images are just a small few of those which have passed the initial test of nit-picking finicky-ness, that somewhat obscene stage of the process in which all flaws are evident to the naked creative eye. Well, my mad little eyes anyway;)

Here we go:

.

Arielle

.

S3

.

Of healing and new beginnings. Not necessarily religious, although the image does contain many personal, spiritual associations, purely for myself. I like to envisage her as a sort of cross-cultural faith healer, whatever your actual faith, or lack of, thereof. Her creation was also semi-influenced by Japanese folklore, lunar myths and the usual staple of classic fairytales.

She resides, for the most part, on the moon, along with her dovecote companion (instead of the usual three black ravens). She is a distant relation of Dulcimer (whooda guessed???), although apart from the voluminous hairdo, they do not have a great deal in common.

I have several versions of this particular image on file. The decision to add the gnarly tree border, along with the little elf houses was a very last minute affair (neighborhood watch?). I think...... I'm quite sure, that it is finally complete ~

.

All in a Row

.

S55

.

Hanging out, or, of ornithology and pretty maids.

Aww, what a sweetheart. But how on earth does she manage to perch with such incredible poise without tumbling forwards (or backwards) and breaking her egg? She evidently has access to the same, arcane secrets that dear old Humpty Dumpty possessed, I dare say. Sadly, Humpty did eventually topple over....No!

.

Thumbelina

.

S2_2

.

This little Thumbling is most definitely not on the lookout for a stray, childless woodcutter to offer her temporary lodgings (unlike myself;). She resides at the Palace of Birds, just south of the Isles of Ambrosia. I am presuming that you all already know the whereabouts of the Palace of Birds and the Isles of Ambrosia, therefore I should not have to provide you with a map (they are quite difficult to get hold of around this neck of the woods).

.

Parasol

.

S1

.

A complete, more symmetrical version of my 'back soon' image from the previous post. Did I mention the perfectionism? I simply could not live with the previous positioning of her legs. She had to undergo severe rearrangements before I was satisfied, and that parasol of hair, well....

Incidentally, the three ravens have names. They are the same three ravens that feature in many of my past works; Nigel, Rafiel and Tom O' Bedlam respectively.

Temporary Blog Break...

.

Bssmalla

.

Dulcimer returns! ...... I'm starting to wonder just how much influence Struwwelpeter had upon me as a child....

.

Struww

.

But...

....the time has come for me to devote myself fully to house-move preparations (yes, I am still in the process, it is looking to be a long haul) and a rather demanding commissioned project, so I must force myself to take a teeny weeny break from creating, blogging and daydreaming for a while.

I may still be popping in, briefly, to share little bits of this and that, and of course, my shop will be running as usual throughout. If I am a little slow to answer private (non shop related) emails, please have patience with me, I am still trying to catch up on quite a handful from over the past week or so. But not to fear, I ought to be back in full swing very soon!

Take care, you lovely people:)

A World of their Own...

.

Hello again!

Another brief-ish postie ( I am still caught up in a whirlwind of commissions, not to mention those curious, changeable emotions that accompany the art of moving house)...but I do have a couple of brand new creative offerings to share....

.

Ribbons

.

Ribbons_smalla

.

A digital 'sketchbook' of minimal sweethearts.

I have always loved the idea of everyday, otherwise inanimate objects taking on a life of their very own. Here, my little lady does not seem at all surprised to discover that her pretty blue ribbons have decided to join in the dance. And why ever shouldn't they?

.

Sweets

.

Sweets_smalla

.

Wayward braids and a candy cascade.

A rainbow of confectionary delights. Are they following her, or has she carelessly let them fall from her hands as she wanders off into adventures as yet unknown?

.

Fortress of Doors

.

Fortress_smalla

.

"Can anybody tell me how to get to the fortress of doors?"

Said Alice.

American McGee's Alice, of course.

What I loved most about the narrative aspect of this particular PC game was the concept of a grown Alice having to re-address her relationship to the past. There are many dark moments throughout, but ultimately, Alice will discover her ultimate self in the form of acceptance, forgiveness and a forward-looking heart.

Well, this is how I perceived it:)

.

Memory Hair

.

Memhair_small

.

And some things shall just have to remain a mystery for all time...

.

..............................................

.

.....Other goodies:

.

Bapr2_2

.

New books. More for the ghostie collection (I am thrilled to see a Fuseli image on the front cover!).

And the wonderful, if seriously odd, Kelly Link:

.

Stranger

.

Stranger Things Happen

.

Music for waking dreams:

.

Bapr1

.

New albums by Colleen. Having never sampled her work before, I was in for a rather sweet surprise. Perfect mellow meanderings, akin to waking dreams. Childlike, ambient loveliness indeed.

Rabbit Candies..............

.

Yet another inexplicably, nonsensical, thoroughly irrelevant title ~

....and on we go!

.

Meet Dulcimer

.

Bl7a

.

Her full title, Dulcimer Nix. Shapeshifting lover of songs and stones, ravens and crows, scissors and bows. And another Magician's Daughter....

.

Heathcliffe

.

Bl5

.

A strange, strange boy; somewhat vain, always charming.

.

The Cot

.

Bl6a

.

The cot may represent confinement, security, or or a reluctance to leave the comforts of childhood behind. Perhaps. Yet here, there are no outer walls. The lowered side guard, the hesitant hand might equally suggest that our dreamer has the pleasure of experiencing both liberty and seclusion at will....... that freedom, after all, is surely a state of mind.

Again, perhaps...

.

......................................

.

A rather brief visit this evening. I am still in the process of organising my move and working on new commissions. Nevertheless, some things must be shared!

.

Like this! The very very hard to locate film version of Angela Carter's Magic Toyshop! I am so extremely joyous to have this film in my possession at long, long last...and do not be put off by the hideously disturbing cover, this is a magnificently beautiful film! One of my favourite ever books brought to life. I am forever indebted to Jeanette for such a perfectly thoughtful gift:)

.

Mtsmall_2

.

Ever heard of Grey Gardens? Sample the squalid splendour of the Bouvier Beales....for some curious reason, I have replayed this film at least eight times since it arrived last week. Some things just have....an intangible appeal. Find the film here.

.

Gg

.

Below, my very first Fern Animal. I am so very in love with this little creature. The first of a growing collection, i hope!

.

Bl2

.

And finally, some Etsy/flickr goodness to share, in the form of Elle Moss, one of my favourite self portrait artists online.

.

Ellem

.

Be sure to check out her work:)

Copy Cats.......

.

...Suck. It has to be said.

.

Cc

.

I have hesitated to speak aloud with regards to this dubious and ever so tricky subject for quite some time now, regardless the persistent emails sent to me by concerned contacts and friends. However, I do believe that the time has come for me to actually share my feelings on the matter: a matter which concerns both myself and many other artists who present their work in the public domain....Basically, I am now fully aware (enlightened!) that many blatant imitations of my work, my style and my techniques are circulating almost 'of a sudden' over at Etsy, Flickr and elsewhere.

By blatant imitations, I am referring to a direct theft of my particular style, motifs and techniques. Now, I am fully aware that I do not own a particular set of techniques, of course, they are available to all who care to utilise them, but I am instead pointing to work that appears almost instantaneously with my own, sometimes even a day later, which is almost identical in every way...apart from, perhaps, a sense of studied practice. It would be quite difficult for me to illustrate this to a fine point, for I would surely have to name names, or else show the works in question, which I simply cannot and will not do.

So, I can only hope that my regular readers and support base will recognize the issue for what it is, and realize that this particular post is directed, in the main, to the copy cats themselves.

They will know who they are, for they follow my work almost religiously so; favouriting my images, yet oddly, rarely ever mentioning me as a source of inspiration - in fact, some of them even communicate with me via email on a regular basis, asking me questions about the work, then go away to promptly recreate it. For a time, I was more bewildered than disturbed, and as they say, imitation is the sincerest form of flattery (!), but now? I consider the lack of respect and the underhanded manner in which the work is imitated to be downright rude, cowardly, and grossly suggestive of an incredible lack of imagination.

At least 3 of these new 'shops' have denied all knowledge of my existence when questioned by friends. Yet they do actually communicate with me privately and collect my work in their 'favourite' files. Stranger and stranger indeed. It is the ignorance and shameless theft of another persons ideas which troubles me. I do not mind any individual using my work as an 'open' source of inspiration, it is a most pleasurable thing to discover - but there surely is a difference between those who are merely inspired and openly impressed and those who snake around in the shadows, lurking over every new upload of work, with only one intention in mind - to copy it, blatantly, and then attempting to sell it.

I would like to point out here that i do not consider the grafting of rabbit heads onto human bodies to be my own invention. That would be ridiculous. This particular practice is very common amongst many of us in the creative community, and we all embellish our images with our own, distinctive style or flair. Nobody has the copyright on anthropomorphism, in much the same way that nobody has the true copyright to a style or technique. But as many of us know, a copy is a copy.

I will attempt to illustrate an example here : take the work of Marmeecraft (I'm sorry Marjorie, my dear, but you are distinctive!). Her illustrations and paintings are so undeniably 'her own'. It would be immediately visible to all who are familiar with her work if somebody began to churn out endless, cheap imitations. Now, on occasion, both myself and Marmee use animal heads upon human bodies, and it is probably even obvious that we both share a quite similar passion for the expressive potential of hair! Ok, that is very true, but we are each so very different in the way in which we express these common interests, visually, that I cannot imagine any feelings of intrusion or imitation ever disturbing our respect for each other. Our work has certain passions in common, but what we actually produce is nothing alike. And the same goes for so many other artists who have an interest in such themes. I am hoping that this will have made some sense, if any (!!!)

So, finally, you know who you are. You will feel a twinge within you when and if you read this (and you most likely will read it, because you devour my every move). And all that I would like to ask is that you have a little more respect for the hours and even years that I have put into the work that I love - work that you have spent little to no time caring for; work that you do not express from your heart, nor from your intellect. To copy the work of other artists is, like it or not, a violation. People notice it, and they are never, ever impressed.

Does it worry me? No.

Worry is the wrong word. But I do believe that we have a right to express our feelings on the matter, and to voice our recognition of it. And if we, the artists are aware of it, then so too are the audience.

I have made this post as a direct response to the many emails that I have received recently on the subject. It is intended to shed some light onto an already unmanageable issue and to bring awareness to those who may not have encountered the imitations in question as yet. It is also intended to reach the eyes of those who are the cause for concern.

I am not quite used to speaking so boldly about my feelings on such matters, and I do hope that I have handled it as decently yet as honestly as possible.

I am simply asking the people in question to think about what they are doing.

I adore what I do. It is integral to my being. To imitate the visual elements of the work itself is fruitless. The nucleus, the seed from which my ideas continually grow, cannot, thank god, be stolen:)

Imitations rarely ever shine, even if they manage to gain a certain amount of recognition. To create what comes naturally to you is the greatest compliment that you could possibly bestow upon yourself.

Try it and see.

.

.....................................

.

And my many thanks to those of you who have been kind enough to alert me to such matters, and to those who have been so perfectly supportive. Especially my Sylvia Plath loving friend:) xxx

.

......................

***re-edit - Please understand that I only refer to blatant copying that is both insidious and sneaky, and an almost direct imitation of my work. I do not aim any of the above towards persons who have taken my images or collage techniques as a source of inspiration. Please do not confuse yourselves with the true offenders....I know we all worry at times:)***

Fables...

.

...Of innocence, of longing..........and darkling hearts.

.

Belonging

.

Banew1a_3

.

She represents a mixture of contentment and longing. Of practicality and dreams.

Sometimes she sings, softly, in a voice as gentle, as indistinct as the sound of distant waves.

.

Rapunzel

.

Ba1aa

.

The reluctant princess. Bound to the tower by those self same 'locks' that were reputed to have brought about her liberation. Not so here! Our reluctant princess has absolutely no intention of relinquishing her solitude just yet. As for her prince.... Local legend has it that the birds and small spectres are frequently employed to relay their messages of love....for the prince inhabits his own, solitary tower, like her own mirror-image, at the opposite end of the woods.

.

Sleeping Ghosts

.

Ba5_2

.

Did I mention the tiny spectres...?

.

Angelica's Garden

.

Ba3a_2

.

The remnants of her own, forgotten parties. Latent, not lost.

The moss, both a symbol of renewal and a positive acceptance of the past.

.

The Resolution

.

Ba6

.

The resolution to leave a familiar space behind and move into another, more alien space....encapsulated, whimsically-nightmare style, by yours truly.

That stifling apprehension familiar to those of us who are about to leave behind one old, beloved home and move on to pastures new. Yet a risk never taken is a lesson never learned...

Something that I shall be doing very soon:)

.

Snow White

.

Ba2

.

Of spilled metaphorical milk, falling asleep for a hundred years, and the five bewildered brothers who became her birds.

.

................................................................

.

So, I am about to start looking for a new place to live! You will have to forgive (or at least tolerate) the nebulous flow of recent posts. I am 50% terror and 50 % excitement combined. New beginnings are apt to knock me senseless for a while, but I'm hoping you'll bear with me...and wish me luck:)
