Charlotte-Cherry herself likes to daydream. This was her most favourite photoshoot of all. It sure beats having your faced pushed flat onto a scanner bed, like last time, she says, petulantly.

Charlotte-Cherry is a very pleasant young lady. Her curious mood-swings, when they do arise, are only very small sized mood swings at that. She likes to read historical romance stories and obscure French poetry. She is currently learning to master several European languages (particularly French) so that she can fulfill her dream of becoming a historical-romance-fiction-book translator when she grows up.

Charlotte-Cherry is constantly falling in love. Today, as it happens.......

.

Blm8_2

.

Oh dear.

She also has a soft spot for a certain handsome young resin boy.....which brings me to the work of a brand new Etsy photographer/artist and flickr friend of mine, royalatelier. Here are a few examples of his work:

.

End of playtime

.

Ra1

.

Yes, the model in the above photograph is Otto, Charlotte -Cherry's most recent fixation. It has lasted all of 48 hours, which is a novelty in itself!

I have no idea whether Dylan (royalatelier) or Otto for that matter, actually know anything of this...but I dare say they will now, so they are simply going to have to put up with it.

.

Not Horses

.

Ra2

Check out his shop for more work, whilst familiarising yourself with such curious characters as his 'lonely aristocratic children' (!)

.

More Etsy goodness: another relatively new-ish shop full to the brim with glorious photography......the work of ErinTyner:

.

And the gorgeous drawings/giclee prints of LizaCorbett:

.................................................

.

Okay, I think it is time I signed off for the night (dawn light beckons me to sleep!)....and Charlotte-Cherry is attempting this very moment to lecture Mirlo about the merits of not chasing small winged creatures, bathroom beetles and wind up white mice.

It does not bode well.

.

Blm2

.

Perhaps she ought to have spent the evening more constructively (if you can discount daydreaming about poor Otto), reading her lesson books, for example, or else admiring her great-great-grandmother's ornate little pill case whilst conversing with Samuel Pig (he's slinking around in the background there..)

We shall all go to bed with our books now. With tea and tiny candles.

We hope that you have enjoyed our strange little company this evening, and you know we'll be back very soon!

SweetDreams, as always:)

xxxxxxx

.

Oh! And I must offer sincere and extreme gratitude to a small group of friends and the wonderful Etsy community for their support regarding the blatant theft of my images, which were being sold on Ebay up until late this evening. A truly horrible experience made much more bearable thanks to such incredible loyalty and good advice! My particular thanks to littleputbooks, Vanessa, Emily, and all who were contributors to this forum thread - which outlines the entire ordeal.

(there are a scattering of expletives in the forum post: just a little heads-up in view of any younger readers out there!)

SecretGirls .....(part 2)

.

Afternoon Poem

.

Sl11

.

A poem for the afternoon.

The barely audible ticking of the glass domed clock on the mantelpiece. The occasional tink of teaspoons playing against china cups. The drifting lilt of birdsong and the subtle shifting of limbs beneath voluminous skirts....And our dreams have quite suddenly become tangible, waiting for the magic hour.

.

A faraway Song

.

Sl4

.

A faraway song, heard only by the youngest child.

A timid, benevolent soul, her sisters say that she was brought to them by the fairies. A changeling with lilac coloured eyes. How could she be human? her sisters say.

.

Parlour Games

.

Sl12

.

And when we grow bored, we will invent new games. Someone will always have count to one hundred and sixty, whilst not looking, as the rest of us clear off in search of the perfect place to hide. Our house has so many large and unused rooms, so many long and curious passageways, that it is ever so easy, sometimes, to find oneself quite lost.

.

Parlour Games 2

.

Sl14

.

But finding oneself lost is almost always the best part of all. There are doors in our house that disappear the moment you step through them.

.

The Visitor

.

Sl111

.

Who only appears by the light of the moon. Her lily-white, translucent skin emits its very own, peculiar glow. Enough, just enough, for you to catch a glimpse of her, before she melts into moonbeams and your memories of long, long ago.

.

Queenie

.

Sl8

.

They nicknamed her 'Queenie', for how terribly she behaves when she cannot have her way.

.

...........................................................

.

.

Mirlomarch

.

They say that if you are lucky enough to catch a falling star, you must place the star inside of a silver locket that has been kissed by moonlight, right beside a picture of the one you love the most.

I did.

And the logic to this will remain unknown for ever...

Her glorious frocks - Dollmore

.

.........................................................

.

I keep dreaming about dolls these past few nights. I cannot recall them too well, but they do leave me with the rather strange sensation of having stumbled upon something extraordinary. My dreams are not always, nor are they usually, extraordinary, so this is quite a delight for me.

More to come! xxx

Inhabit secret worlds.....

.

Ce Matin La

.

Yb6_2

.

A safe new world, where there are no limits to how far one can wander in dreams and in love.

The title taken from a track by Air, from the album Moon Safari.

.

The Princess

.

Yb10

.

The Indigo Princess is an only child. Her heart belongs to the ravens. She sleeps upon a mattress of moons flowers, where each night she dreams of friends she has never known.

.

Porcelain

.

Yb12_3

.

The fragile romantic is bound to follow her hearts desire. For better, or for worse.

Yet what shall become of the heart that wanders too far?

.

Rosette

.

Yb8bb_2

.

Rosette courts serendipity, and all that she touches springs to life.

.

The Summerhouse

..

Yb7_2

.

A ghost story.

The Summerhouse, long since deserted by its human inhabitants, now becomes a haven for lost souls.

.

Attic

.

Yb9_2

.

They reside in the attic. Sometimes they share stories, fairytales and secrets at dusk. And sometimes they share kisses, as children do, and their kisses taste of cinnamon and love.

Whatever became of the stories read by firelight? She said.

Treats ....

.

Treats galore today!

Check out my Typepad Feature!

.

Badge_tp_featured_weblog_heart_2

.

(Thanks to Susanna for alerting me to it, and also to Typepad themselves, yay! - especially for the nifty little baby blue Typepad T-shirt that arrived in the mail last week:)

.

.

Treats .

.

I have decided that it is time to rest for a little while; to rest, to read, to refuel.....and to treat myself to some thoroughly impractical yet oh-so-necessary doll related goodies :)

We all need to master the art of self appreciation once in a little while.... no matter what our profession, obsessions or responsibilities....for my own part, I have fiiiinally completed a cart load of overdue commissions (whilst settling myself down to contemplate the new ones already ~), plus, having wrenched myself away from Photoshop over the past 24 hours (it hurts, oh lord!), it appears that I have what you might call 'overdone it' for the past two months or so - skipping sleep, neglecting to read, forgetting how to cook (!), etc. So, it is time to take a small, self congratulatory holiday from all things 'work' (apart from the shop and the post office, which never actually stop, because they just can't)...

That said, creating is my favourite, most cherished form of relaxation. This may seem like a wee contradiction of sorts, but you can have too much of a good thing - balance, as always, is the key. It is vital, once in a while, to distance yourself, if only slightly, from the very thing that you love the most, if only to appreciate it all the more. I have this peculiar habit of becoming literally consumed by the urge to create, vanishing into (or out of) myself for weeks on end, and then hurtling back to earth again of a sudden, as if waking from a curious dream, only to find that somewhere along the line I have forgotten to pay the household bills, developed a very stiff neck, and generally making rather baffled enquiries as to what day it is.

Sometimes, the simple task of answering emails can swallow up an entire afternoon here at Art&Ghosts Towers. Absolutely none of the Circus recruits ever lends a hand (the circus-y temperament is most certainly a volatile thing ~ on many an occasion, having asked a stray member for assistance when parceling up my shop orders, I have experienced a fierce dig in the ribs for my troubles, swiftly followed by a sneaky little stamp on the foot...almost always accompanied by a chorus of giggles or "Hoh!" sounds as I am left to get on with it, alone, as usual).

So, all that accounted for (not to mention the practical side of life!), I think that I really do deserve a little rest. It will likely last all of 48 hours, as opposed to my pre-planned week, but nevermind. I can try! A few abandoned hours with a box set of my favourite detective drama's...or else curling up on the sofa with a compilation of gothic short stories (yes, I'm still hooked on the old ghost tales) or simply singing to my cat ( he likes this) ought to do the trick. Not forgetting the thrill of anticipation that always precedes the arrival of new doll related goodies in the post - oh yay!

And then there's this.........

.

Ds1

.

My other Somerset feature.....many features in one month, or so it seems. A strange thing to behold here in my little private world! It finally arrived this week, so colourful, packed to the seams with so much digital collage-y loveliness....such a pleasant surprise indeed!

.

Ds6

.

A peek at the inside...

.

Ds8

.

And so on, you get the picture.

.

Speaking of magazines, I was quite pleasantly shocked to behold this particular little number sitting on an all but neglected crafty-type-shelf at the local book store this afternoon...

.

Ds10

.

And the Etsy feature in the back too! It was rather costly to purchase, but shops here in the UK charge almost the US dollar equivalent (import costs added, etc), so...what can you do? A $30 book ought to cost me somewhere around £15 here, but we will generally pay up to £25.

To be English and earn your living in Dollars is a very surreal thing indeed (lets not even contemplate the ever painfull splitting-in-half of my gross earnings each week). That said, I have become so used to it now that I struggle to negotiate my own currency - writing out British addresses feels almost foreign to me, they no longer flow with the same ease as my abbreviated States and Zip codes;).

.

........................................

.

So, now for the treats and doll goodies!

.

Ds2_2

.

A gift that i adore. I just love the blue stripes with the floral pattern, and the buttoned up collar! Such a pretty thing; the skirt poofs out like a 1950's ballgown (knee length), with a beautiful lace trim underskirt to boot!

.

Ds11

.

My Lati purchases (after much saving and waiting!)

Top left to bottom right:

1.Sweet Berry dress set.

2.White Ribbon MSD sized shoes.

3.White MaryJanes for my Lati (green) Lea!

4.Lati Yern Doll (complete with immaculate Classic Loli Dress) mwhaaaaa! (she is also the girl in the Sweet Berry dress picture). How perfectly haunted she appears. Haunted, yet self contained content! She will be sure to appear in many of my images to come.

*love*

Madness, said a wise old soul, comes in many guises. I could not resist this strange, large headed little creature, either.....

.

Dalfrara

.

Yep, it's the Frara Dal.

She shall be sketched and painted relentlessly, no doubt!

.

...........................................

.

And lastly, I finally located a curious (and rather elusive) little girl that has been haunting my imagination for quite some time now. A very lovely lady on Flickr decided to put her up for 'adoption', and the rest, of course, is history...

.

Yomo

.

Photo taken from the Doll&Doll website.

So there completes my self appreciation for one month! Needless to say, buying in USD's is considerably more pleasant than selling in USD's. Everything basically comes to half price;)

.

....Complete, that is, apart from the books! Some of my dream books are on their way at long, long last!

.

Dm1_2

Katan Doll - with dolls by Amano Katan, photographs by Yoshida Ryo.

.

Dm2

.

Quivering Eyelid Photobook, both available at one of my favourite online shops: Dollmore!

.

Now, before I leave you for the afternoon, I should like to pay a teenyweeny homage to Photoshop, and to those of you who have ventured to ask me 'how' I fashion my digitally illustrated images (those which begin with a photograph). Well, my Etsy profile does contain far more of a satisfactory explanation than the following illustration, but I have never bared my naked PSD files to the world before, and it might just be about time they made an appearance; all raw and higgledypiggledy!

.

Ds5

.

Ds3

.

Ds4

.

The first image might go so far as to ever so slightly illustrate how I transfer colours from one image to another, taking samples from my old paintings and textures (like watercolour washes, acrylic smears, etc), and creating brand new brushes in the process. Nearly every painting that I have ever made has somehow found a part of itself featuring (however slightly) in future works. In this instance, a tiny blob of crimson was used to make the blush on my girls cheek. Why did I not do this with a ready made brush? I can't say, I just enjoy doing things this way.

The central image Shows one of my 'Parts' files. I store countless parts and selections (like collage cut-outs) in small PSD files, so that by now, you can imagine that I have what might amount to a City library sized amount of the things lying around on separate hard drives and data discs! Who said that digital collage was less messy than traditional scissors and glue???? The blue dress to the right of the image is the pretty new frock that I shared with you earlier in this post. I obliterated the pattern and moved some of the limbs around quite a bit, also disposing of the head! This is how i 'paint' into the photographs, sometimes to the extent that they are, more or less, a 'complete' illustration by the time that I am done. I swapped the colour and texture of the frock for semi-transparent acrylic clouds, created new arms from the texture of an old cardigan, and finally, drew in the legs (my own had been bare, but I preferred that she wore black stockings). The remaining 'parts' within this document include a Breyer model horse, a painted stack of books, a sketch of an owl, various drawings of the 'Somnambulist's' mask, and one of my most regularly used doll heads, now sporting thick bangs (in other words, a fringe).

Some of these little motifs are evident in my most recent creations, for better or for worse!

The last image shows a single file containing work that I created for a recent commission, in which I created a doll-like figure for an artist's website/logo design. She had desired something akin to the figure in Lake House, originally, although we wound up with something altogether different in the end!

And that's about it, for now.....although now that I have begun, I might not be able to stop sharing such weird little examples of my 'work in process' with you from time to time. Stranger things have happened.

As for right now, I simply must go and attend to a stray unicorn that has somehow managed to kick its way into the Art&Ghosts Circus rehearsal tent. He is very handsome, and very distracting with it, but I am used to this by now...

Back soon!

Lessons in Dreamtime....

.

Of waking dreams. And the spaces inbetween.....

Some new works.

.

Miette

.

March6

.

Miette. Small and sweet (French). Inspired by my own childhood. My love affair with the twilight things... those darkly, most potent spaces between the hours in which only a child can discover such enchantments. Those fleeting moments when the spectral light of bluebells deep inside of the wildest, darkest woods can still your heart with wonder. When the hoot of a small owl or the curious thrill of a sudden breeze is enough to convince you of the eternal presence of all unseen things .

Twilight : a passport between worlds. So they say...

Miette knows.

.

Lessons in Dreamtime

.

March55_2

.

There had to be a school for the Magician's Daughters. And this is it. Neither here nor there yet everywhere. Magic is and always will be...weird.

These girls like cake. They are remarkably studious, despite their aura of dreaminess. Dreaminess is essential to a magical education. Without it there simply is no magic.

.

Owlette

.

March22

.

Owlette. Friend of owls, friend of the fields.

Friend also, of the mushrooms. They have a habit of talking to her in a language that the owls cannot understand, and this, in turn, infuriates them.

Nothing on earth can infuriate Owlette. She has a very calming aura.

.

The Recurring Hares

.

March44_2

.

A chance meeting. A surprise meeting.

Their hearts skip to the same rhythm. A friendship born to last, methinks:)

.

Henrietta Duck

.

March3

.

A simple, homely girl.

Henrietta Duck experienced a rather difficult birth. I have never, ever contemplated the use of a long necked bird upon a human body before, so Henrietta came as quite a surprise. I spent a loooong time positioning the head - the most unlikely graft that I have ever attempted, regardless how simple the result -  which didn't seem to actually want to attach itself to the neck.....nonetheless, she was more than willing to acquiesce in the end.

.

The Conjurer

.

March7

.

Another for the Magician's Daughters. This is a close-up detail. She is actually walking the tightrope whilst performing. Such a spectacular little lady she is.

The tightrope was rather a foreign concept to her up until last week (Tuesday to be exact) before a certain smarty-pants recruit at the Art&Ghosts Circus dared her to give it a whirl. She turns out to be something of a natural, all things considered.

.

Hare Girl

.

March8

.

Made a mess of the hair, I'm quite sure of it, but there is something about the image itself which appeals to me. I particularly like the mushrooms, the little mouse, her gigantic 'ears'!

And lastly, I would like to share the darker, blue version of 'Miette'.....I was so hard pushed to choose between the two, so decided to go with them both:

.

Miette (blue)

.

March6a

.

This was prior to the inclusion of the little owl, and the pink hair, so it isn't quite complete, but I'm very fond of it as is. Perhaps she is little Miette before the enchantment begins to encircle her....anything is possible.

.

......................................................

.

Well, off i go now, my book jealously beckons...

Thanks so much for visiting, as always!

.......................................................................

.

I haven't been able to take much time out to write lately, so I hope that you can make yourselves suitably cozy with these sparsely written yet picture laden posts..........I have been working on more of the same theme; portraits of strange girls. And their hair.

I don't quite know what it is about the hair, but I do seem to find it all so insanely expressive, a sort of entity in itself, if that makes any sense at all. It has to, because there is hardly any other way to describe it. The swoops and swirls and stray curls have taken on a life of their very own, the girls beneath them either nonplussed, outstaged or 'in the know' . And of course, there are secrets afoot.....these girls, together with their furiously unruly, lusciously uncivilised bouffants are, each in themeselves, a story that has yet to be told....

.

Carnival

.

Mk26abc_small

.

The Ghislaine Twins.

Part of the same series of portraits, I was too intrigued to perceive them in full-bodied mode to stick to the regular head/shoulders scenario. An exception to the rule rarely hurts, I suppose.

Connected by curls, these little curiosities are bedecked with familiar motifs, yet they are not about to reveal themselves on a whim. They know that we have not got the faintest clue what they are thinking about, although they are bold enough to encourage speculation........that ever-so-confident gaze, for instance. Pretty pastels, a bunch of old keys (3, as always!) and candy coloured heart-shaped balloons. A carnival going on all by itself, perhaps? Probably.

.

Ghislaine

.

Mk25_spotty_smaller

.

I love to play around with the same head, hair and body parts, taking them apart, piece by piece, then 'painting' them back together again, yet with a sublte (or sometimes a more obvious) difference. I can sit for hours this way, making tiny adjustments, shaping new eyes, hairstyles, facial expressions. I tend not to use actual doll heads so much nowadays - having slaved away to recreate the 'big-eyed-ball-jointed-dolly eye shape, i am having too much fun styling my very own (with brushes, although my actual technique is somewhat curious in itself). I do start out with a standard dolls head 'shape', but will generally work into the features, literally obliterating the original photograph within minutes of beginning work on it. So why use it? I suppose it gives me a framework to start from, so to speak, a kind of basic 'mold' or visual catalyst that is like the kernel of an idea not yet born. A seed that grows, in a way. It is simply how i work best, and most happily!

The above is a portrait of Ghislaine. I have always wanted to utilise this particular name. The 'French name' incident, seemingly the staple of this particular post, remains, for the large part, a total mystery to me. Undeniably obvious yet wholly unintentional. You will at some point discover that my strange girls are more of an 'international' affair, and yet this very statement also serves to remind me that (just for the record) I have not yet perfected the art of creating darker skin tones, sadly. It is something that I am working on, but can never seem to get quite right. This is because most of the body and head parts that i have on file are either my own, or paler skinned dolls ( one can only go so far with the anaemic look!), so.......hopefully soon.

.

Ghislaine #2

.

Mk25abc_small

.

Playing with pastels again. Same girl, a more illustrative, softer look.

.

Dauphine

.

Mk23bdarker_small

.

I adore her expression! Those eyes almost pull me apart! I spent rather a loooong time (hours upon hours) fashioning the hairstyle, and still, I'm not entirely sure whether I am satisfied with it or not. Things just get out of hand sometimes. Oh yes they do! I so loved creating the dress collar and the little nests, though. Another nature child. Perhaps she is yet another, humble attempt to express the seductive beauty of all things familiar yet strange.

.

Delphine

.

Mk24a_small

.

A photomontage, with wood. Similar to 'Stella' of the previous post.

The Oracle child. At one with the undines, and a lover of Japanese folk tales, Delphine is a terrifyingly astute young lady. Five times winner of the Faerie Nobel Peace Prize (alarmingly dissimilar to our own Nobel Peace Prize), she has published twenty-six novels, set up a hospital for injured birds, and has several impossibly cute boyfriends; one of them a centaur (horrendously smug, but intolerably good looking). Not bad.

.

...................................................................

.

I must leave you now.....I have a pre-planned arrangement to attend to concerning customs labels, air mail stickers and prettily coloured cellotape!

Oooh, I also received a rather curious email surprise this evening - from Blogged.com...apparently my blog has been reviewed and awarded a 9.1 score out of 10 for Frequency of Updates, Relevance of Content, Site Design, and Writing Style.

I have no idea what this means, exactly, but thankyou, whoever you are!

I would also like to thank the very lovely Frankie for sending me a copy of the Somerset Studio magazine containing my interview:)

Prior to this, imagine my joy upon stumbling across this photograph whilst browsing through Flickr last night!

p

Lula

p

My contribution to the latest edition of Lula Magazine.......

Again, I hadn't been aware of it having been released, so it was such a treat to find this lovely, colourful rendition over at making a meal's photostream (thankyou!).....

Seems this past month or so has been a pretty good 'magazine month' for weird little me. Things always seem to happen all at once - and once upon a time, of course.

.........................................

I have also almost reached my first 1000 sales over at Etsy.....I am, as we speak, teetering at 999. I kind of like that number, and the 1000 mark denotes a little milestone for me, regardless how ultimately unimportant such silly little counting games actually are. But I would like to thank each and every one of my customers and friends for all of your continued support, truly:)

To celebrate, i have rustled up a gigantic-style stock update and have many more exciting goodies heading for the shop very soon (moo cards, postcard sets, new prints, etc)!

Before I attempt to retreat into some long overdue relaxation, I should like to share some of my favouritest things of recent days.

p

Blogmar13_2

p

(top left to bottom right)

1) The adorable LaMaga! This ever so talented and generous artist sent me a most gorgeous surprise parcel this week, containing a variety of her works, postcards, ephemera, etc. Thankyou so much! I recommend that you check out her Etsy shop if you haven't already - a long time favourite of mine:)

2) A vintage teapot. Indeed.

3)Goldfrapp's Seventh Tree. I can't quit listening to this haunting, ethereal, soul-warming album these past few nights. It has become a sort of comfort blanket.

4)My beautifully temptatious cookery bible, Apples for Jam. (basket my own, no idea where it originates from)

p

Blogmar14a

p

1) Angelica. Exquisitely dark tale about a repressed, haunted victorian family. I had to quit half way through and reach for M.R James (!) but oh I do love the Charles Dodgeson Photograph adorning the front cover!

2) Treatzone handprinted Postcards. I cannot bear to use them!

3) Beautiful Sarah Blank pendant. So, so perfect!

4) Cherished Planter Pot Heads, the creations of clayflower22.

I couldn't sleep, so I decided to share these newest girlies:)

I'm not quite sure what they are all about just yet, although something tells me that those curious vintage paintings of large eyed, sad eyed children may have influenced me ever so slightly. I am also thinking of a sort of 'iilustrated book of ordinary (and not-so-ordinary) girls names'........I will write more soon!

Sleep beckons.....

Oh, and have a fabulously happy Mothers Day (UK) !!!

.

Back very soon xxxxxx
